Description
Who says all the different art forms have to be so serious? The flute choir music to “Stuff and Nonsense” by Erika Skye Andres is inspired by three short, nonsensical poems: “The Purple Cow” by Gelett Burgess, “Snowball” by Shel Silverstein, and “The Termite” by Ogden Nash.
The first movement depicts a purple cow approaching, mooing and jingling his cowbell. The music is then very happy as he frolics through the grass with just a brief moment of calm in the middle as he rests. Then at the end, you can hear the cow leaving in much the same way as he came.
In the second poem, “Snowball,” a pet ownership is made of a snowball and the music depicts this new, happy friendship. But the music starts to melt like the snow, getting lower and slower until it is gone.
Finally, in the last movement, the flute choir gets to be a hungry, little termite! You hear the first, small nibbles at the beginning, and then chaos starts to break loose as it eats more and more until it goes right through the floor! Along with Cousin May whose free fall is accompanied by a huge and fast descending scale in the whole choir.
For a flute choir of two piccolos, 3 flutes (flute 1 doubles on cowbell), alto, and bass and for an advanced ensemble capable of doing some technical runs and arpeggios in keys with multiple sharps and flats along with several extended techniques including pitch bends and glissandos, harmonics, singing and playing, and beatboxing.
You get a downloadable PDF with the full score and parts.
